AhChoo! AhchOOPs....Is Peeing When You Sneeze Normal?
Nope. Peeing when you sneeze is common, but it's not normal. It's not something you have to live with either. Even if you've had 5 kids, even if incontinence is something you've been living with for 20 years, even if you're only 3 months postpartum...the sneeze pees, running pees, and jumping pees don't have to be your reality. Peeing when you sneeze is frequently a sign that there's a muscle imbalance at play. This is something we can work to correct.
Many women in the practice have found relief from incontinence after a series of hands on sessions (gentle adjustments to promote pelvic alignment, visceral work to address tensions in the connective around your organs), along with exercises customized for each patient's needs. Some have even discovered dietary changes were necessarily to completely heal from urinary complaints. I can help you get to the bottom of your incontinence challenges, and identify what may be the best way for you to find relief.
Here are some common questions I get from women around the incontinence issue:
Q: Wait, so really, it's not just something I'm going to have to live with now that I've had a baby?
A: Nope! Just because it's common, doesn't mean you have to accept this as your new reality. It will require a commitment from you to follow through with the simple home exercises and guidelines, but you may be surprised at how quickly you notice improvements.
Q: Does the work in office require a pelvic exam?
A: Not in my office. I'm a big promoter of pelvic floor PTs and may recommend you pay one of them a visit. All the work in my office is done fully dressed. The visceral work may requires some poking around your belly, but I will talk you through everything and if you are not comfortable with anything, no problem! We'll come up with a plan that works for you.
Q: Doesn't everyone leak a little?
A: No. And you don't have to either. (Do I sound like a broken record yet?)
